Dynamic Industrial Policy for Africa

Innovative Institutions, Effective Processes and Flexible Mechanisms

The Annual Economic Report on Africa is a joint publication between the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and African Union Commission (AUC). This year the focus is on Dynamic industrial Policy in Africa.

The report builds on the previous year’s report, which made the case for commodity-based industrialization. It calls on the continent to refocus its economic development strategies on industrialization, particularly on the means for formulating and implementing effective industrial policy.

The report further emphasizes that African governments should not repeat the errors of the past, rather a more holistic alternative would build strong and inclusive institutions for industrial policy and ensure that they interact regularly and harmoniously. The report is based on commissioned studies of industrial policy frameworks in 11 African countries.

The ERA 2014 sets out a framework for getting the policy process right with a view to fostering industrialization.
